ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES Time Commitment - Center Advisory Board meetings are held 6 times a year, for usually 1 hour. In addition, each Advisory Board member is expected to serve on a committee that would generally meet during specified months for an hour. Advisory Board members are also asked to attend special events and awareness events throughout the year. Typical Advisory Board Member Responsibilities Advocacy – Provides positive support of the organization to the general public; speaks publicly of the value of the organization. Education – Takes the initiative to become knowledgeable about the YMCA, programs, and policies of the organization. Communication – Maintains open communication with staff and other Center Advisory Board members. Advisory (Board Development) – Does not set policy but recommends actions or policies to the governing board and/or staff. Research – Conducts necessary research or study to support input to the board; use such research to support personal committee and task force service. Finance (Philanthropy) – Support the full achievement of the YMCA mission through personal contributions and securing adequate funds for community inclusion in programming. Background Screening. Background Checks are conducted on all board volunteers within the Association. Successful completion of this check is a condition of volunteering with the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas. (Screenings are being completed via Volunteer Matters) In partnering with the Y as an Advisory Board member, you can feel confident your contribution will make a meaningful, lasting impact on our community and in the individual lives of many. Advisory Board Expectations Board Orientation - All new and returning advisory board members are expected to attend the Orientation meeting. Board Attendance - Members are expected to make 65-70% of all scheduled meetings. Committee Assignments & Attendance - A member is expected to serve on at least one committee. Committee members are expected to make at least 70% of all scheduled committee meetings. Participation in Giving - All board members are expected to give to the Annual Campaign and Capital Campaigns. Advocacy - All members of the board need to be familiar with the Mission, program and goals of the YMCA and willing to advocate for the Y as needed. Area of Expertise/Skill - All members of the board should be willing to share their specific area of expertise with staff and other board members to advance the goals of the YMCA.
